Brevet de technicien supérieur (BTS)

Every business sector develops new technical support positions associated with engineering, research, senior financial or commercial management. The BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur), a state diploma, meets all the requirements in terms of qualifications and skills, with the aim of immediate professional immersion.

Obtained after 2 years, the BTS confers a professional qualification in the commercial and services sectors. The skills acquired meet the challenge of globalization of trade and a changing productive systems which today require profound technological knowledge, operational know-how and managerial competencies.

Statistics from recent years have shown a high rate of employability among BTS holders (100%). As an internationally recognised state diploma,  the BTS can be a steppingstone to pursue a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree both in Mauritius and abroad.

An Internationally Recognised Diploma

The BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur) is a national diploma of the French higher education system which is part of the European system of LMD (Licence (Degree) –  Masters – Doctorat – PhD). The European Credit Transfer System which allows a student to move through any educational system of the countries of the European Union. The BTS counts for a total of 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

For companies engaged in international competition, the BTS complies with the demands of technical and professional training as defined by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO): “A general education that involves the study of techniques and related sciences, the acquisition of practical skills, attitudes, understanding and knowledge related to the professions of the various sectors of economic and social life.” (Technical and Vocational Education and Training for the 21st Century).

Course Objective

BTS Insurance has been specially conceived for those who wish to join the insurance industry. Senior Insurance Technicians prospect and advise clients, sell insurance covers, study and evaluate risks before deciding upon the conditions which the company can provide cover.

This course enables students to discover the economic and legal environment of the insurance sector through specific technique training, familiarisation with the various fields within the sector and learning of customer relationship management, how to advise and propose insurance covers.

The holder of BTS Insurance works in the personal or professional insurance sector. S/he advises and sells insurance covers to clients following risk assessment. The main tasks involved are follow up on accounts, contribution management, registration of claims, and advisory to clients. The holder must also have a sound knowledge of the industry’s legislation and regulation.

BTS Insurance under Work/Study Program

BTS Insurance is available under the work/study option only. It comes with a training contract with a company. This option exempts students from fees and allows them to acquire valuable professional experience before being qualified.

Once the BTS obtained, the probability of being employed becomes significantly easier. The holder is more likely to be employed by the company where s/he underwent his training under the work/study program.

Job Prospects

The main advantage of BTS Insurance is that it has been specifically designed for integration in the insurance industry. The course therefore caters exactly to the professional demands of the insurance industry.

Holders will be employed in insurance companies, companies with mutual schemes, general agents’ office, brokerage firms and even banks which are increasingly offering insurance services.

Possible positions are account manager, agency employee, insurance benefits manager, disaster manager. With experience, the holder can also work as broker, insurer our general insurance agent.

Following a BTS Insurance, the choice of multiple courses for a bachelor’s degree or a master’s is quite wide.
